Unlocked is a short, psychological drama set in the 1960s in the Dandenong Ranges, Victoria.
The main protagonist, Michael, has wandered off from his friends in search of a unique item. Frantically rushing through the shrubbery, with very little time left before it gets dark, he discovers this item, a mysterious golden key, nestled under some rocks.
Eventually, his friends, Kelly and Thomas, find Michael and force him to show them what he has discovered. The key, now on display to his fellow friends, raises questions amongst them, as Michael is forced to decide whether he should keep the key for his own personal gain or leave it with his close friend knowing that he may never escape from the treacherous world he lives in.
However, in an unusual plot twist, a woman wearing a nurse’s uniform appears behind Michael, calling his name. It is at this instance that the audience understand that Kelly and Thomas were just hallucinations of Michaels thought who suffers from schizophrenia. As the boy walks away from the creek, guided by the nurse from the psychiatric retreat where he stays, he secretly slips the key into his pocket. The key ultimately symbolising a way to unlock ones mind to a different world.
